Renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and delicate, vivid paintings, “Nabeshima ware” is regarded one of the finest porcelain in Japan. As it marks its 350th anniversary this year, a series of commemorative initiatives are planned.
Nabeshima ware traces its origin to the Edo period when the Saga Domain gathered 31 of the most skilled artisans from across Japan to produce gifts and tributes for the Shogun and feudal lords. The domain established the Nabeshima Domain Kiln in Okawachiyama as an official kiln. Following the abolition of feudal domains and the subsequent closure of the official kiln, Nabeshima ware was revived as a private kiln. Today, 29 kilns in Okawachiyama continue to preserve and carry forward the legacy. In 2025, marking 350 years since the kiln’s establishment, Nabeshima Ware Cooperative Association will unify the terminology, standardizing the name as “Nabeshima ware,” which has also been known as “Imari Nabeshima ware” or “Imari ware.” The association has also outlined a vision to preserve and pass down the Nabeshima ware culture, which has been inherited in Okawachiyama for generations. It defines Nabeshima ware as ceramics produced in the spirit of the original Nabeshima Domain Kiln and produced by cooperative members located in Okawachiyama.
“Nabeshima Ware 350th Anniversary Small Plate”: Designed and produced by Hataman Touen
As part of the initiatives, a new logotype has been designed to visually unify the identity of Nabeshima ware. In addition, a digital archive will be created to document the 350-year history, featuring footage of the production process, the natural landscapes of Okawachiyama, and the lives of the local people. A newly launched website and Instagram account will be used to actively share information and updates. Furthermore, existing annual events will be revamped and enhanced. One of the major upcoming events is the “Nabeshima Domain Kiln Ceramic Fair,” scheduled to take place from April 29 to May 5, 2025. A commemorative piece, the “Nabeshima Ware 350th Anniversary Small Plate,” designed and produced by Hataman Touen, will be released in a limited edition, serving as a symbolic tribute to the rich history and tradition of Nabeshima ware.
Further details on the upcoming events will be announced via the official website and social media channels. This year marks a significant milestone in preserving and passing down the history, culture, and spirit of “Nabeshima ware” to future generations, making it a meaningful time to visit the region and experience its legacy.
