JTB Corp., under commission from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Small and Medium Enterprise Support Center, has launched and operates a reservation website for traditional craft experiences in Tokyo within the JTB LAPITA platform. This website is available in both Japanese and English, making it accessible to international visitors. This initiative aligns with the evolving consumer trends of recent years, where travelers increasingly prioritize experiences and services over material purchases.
The reservation website features a curated selection of tours where participants can engage in hands-on traditional craft experiences in Tokyo and its surrounding areas. Visitors can search by location, craft type and duration. The line-up includes a wide range of activities, such as making Edo kiriko sake cups, crafting knives using Tokyo uchihamono (hand-forged blades) techniques and weaving kumihimo (braided cords) traditionally used for kimono. This platform not only provides an opportunity to create unique handcrafted items but also serves as an introduction to the diverse crafts in Tokyo. Each tour is conducted at the workshops of traditional crafts makers, offering participants a rare opportunity to learn directly from skilled artisans. In addition to hands-on production, visitors can gain insights into the techniques, traditions, history and cultural significance of each craft. The experience of observing artisans at work up close, in spaces that are typically not open to the public, adds to the appeal of these tours.
For international travelers and local residents alike, participating in a traditional craft experience is a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Japanese culture. We encourage you to explore the website and incorporate these experiences into your travel plans.
