Fukui Workshop Tour Event “RENEW/2024” to Celebrate Its 10th Anniversary in November

Fukui, recognized as one of the leading manufacturing hubs in Japan, is home to traditional crafts such as Echizen lacquerware, Echizen washi paper, Echizen forged blades, Echizen cabinetry, and Echizen ware. In addition, it is also known for its thriving local industries, including eyeglasses and textile production. The industrial tourism event “RENEW,” which aims to promote sustainable community development, will once again take place from November 1 to 3, 2024. During the event, local workshops and companies will open their doors to the public, allowing visitors to engage with craftsmen through tours and workshops, while also offering opportunities to purchase products and learn about the history and techniques behind their creations.

Last year, 94 local companies participated in the event, attracting a total of 31,000 visitors. This year, in celebration of its 10th anniversary, the event will feature 120 participating companies, with 80 workshops open to the public. A new highlight this year is the “OFFICIAL TOUR,” where visitors can travel in a dedicated vehicle to workshops chosen by RENEW staff, accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who will provide insights into the local production area. Furthermore, a special food and craft event titled “– L’aisance×RENEW – FOOD&CRAFT RESTAURANT” will be held for two days at the “PARK” complex in Kawada district. This event will showcase dishes made from premium local ingredients, served on tableware crafted in Echizen and Sabae, with cuisine prepared by the renowned French restaurant “L’aisance” from Takayanagi, Fukui.

Similar to last year, the “City/People/Work – Localism Expo Fukui –” will also be held concurrently, bringing together people from across Japan who are focused on areas such as craftsmanship, lifestyle, food, education, welfare, and community. A series of talks featuring guest speakers from various fields will also take place. With the anticipated increase in visitors due to the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension, a “RENEW Shuttle Bus” will operate, offering transportation around the production areas. Additional information centers will be set up to assist visitors. Attendees are encouraged to explore RENEW’s initiatives in promoting industrial tourism and fostering a sustainable local industrial environment, all while enjoying the event.
